checked out in oct 2018 but didn't get time to read it so maybe my later shelve
Such a beautiful, moving story. A must read for fans of historical fiction. It’s also a being made into a movie in 2019.
Amazing book - outstanding portrait of people who are in impossible position - a picture of what the effect of war is on everyone who just happens to be in its way.
Historical Fiction has never been done so beautifully. Based during WWII, tells a story of two sisters and their struggle to survive German occupation of France. You become so immersed in their story, you become part of it.
The narrator does an exceptional job, she makes the novel come alive!
Holocaust and a young woman's efforts to rescue prisoners. Powerful story
Well written, fast-paced, and so interesting. It was hard to read about the atrocities committed during WW2, but Kristin Hannah is able to describe them without sensationalism. Definitely a good quick read.
The characters were well developed and the plot captures interesting historical events however the book is 10 chapters too long and drags on.
An incredibly moving story of two sisters and how each responds to the horrors of WWII in very different but equally heroic ways.
Excellent - Kept me reading all 438 pages. The atrocities of the Second World War and how it changed the lives in particular of the French people. Set in France in World War II, two sisters who live in a small village find themselves estranged when they disagree about the imminent threat of occupation. Separated by principles and temperament, each must find her own way forward as she faces moral questions and life or death choices. Beautifully written and will have a lasting hold on me.
This is an amazing book! The second you read the first sentence of the book you'll never want to put it down until your finished. I read this in about a day without stopping. The story is heart wrenching and filled with grief, heroism, and love. I 100% recommend this book to you
Great book, highly recommended!
Omg, after an 8 year reading hiatus (since becoming a mom) this book sucked me right back into my reading addict self. Next stop, more Kristin Hannah books!
Long after this audiobook ended, the characters, the horrors, losses and sacrifices of WWII and the illumination of the overwhelming vitality of love in life stayed with me! I have not read such a good book in a long time! I rooted for and cried with these characters and gasped as the twists and surprises encountered! Highly recommended!
Absolutely adored this book. I read Kristin Hannah’s firefly lane and this book blew it out of the water. Well done and kept my attention. The reader for the audiobook held my attention as well.
I’m a big fan of historical fiction, particularly stories that occur around World Wars.
The Nightingale takes us all the way from 1939 to the end of the World War II. This is an in-depth tale that describes the War, the Resistance in Paris, and the many choices that people had to make in order to survive. This book tore me apart emotionally, put me back together again with a feeling of hope, and tore me apart again. Highly recommended.
Disappointed. I really enjoyed "All the Light We Cannot See". This book, though, lacks a lot of detail. It reads a little more like a romance novel. I found all the romance scenes predictable and cheesy. This book might make a decent summer beach read for light reading. If your looking for something truly emotional that sends you in a whirlwind of thoughts and feelings then give this a hard pass. I really don't get what the hype is about.
Not as good as I expected. Yes, it keeps you interested but more like a page turner, as it does lack depth and as with many modern books on WW2 you feel that it is not author's own pain she describes. It's a great difference when you yourself have a toothache or just feel sorrow for someone who feels it. This book cannot bee even compared with works by Remarque, Heinrich Böll, Lion Feuchtwanger, Viktor Astafyev and Boris Vasilyev-the authors that had to live through the war.
I really enjoyed this book from the perspective of women and the personal battles that were also fought all over Europe during the war. The various things the women in this story had to endure to survive were portrayed very realistically and so incrementally that by the end, you really feel the impact of those war years. My grade 8 daughter also really enjoyed this book. She found the characters rich and endearing. The personal tragedies and sacrifices really teach you about humanity at it's worst and best.
I loved this book. I thought it as very interesting to read about WWII from the perspective of two French sisters, one of whom's husband is away fighting in the war and the other who is unhappy with how she feels her people are reacting to the war. Some critics of the novel have been upset by a few historical inaccuracies, but for me none of that was enough to keep me from being completely entranced with this novel.
I recently read The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah and I absolutely loved it so I was excited to read The Nightingale. Kristin Hannah has such a beautiful writing style but I must admit there was a slow build up in this story. Once it picked up, I didn't want to put it down. It is always so hard to read about the events that took place during WWII and, though this is fictional, it draws on true events from that dark period. Kristin Hannah introduces us to 2 strong admirable women who, in different ways, endured terrible hardships during the war but were heroic in their efforts. It was an emotional read and I am still thinking about the story. It is definitely an impressionable book. It is one that will stay with me for a long time and is worth reading!
Fabulous Read. This book keeps you interested all the way through. The ending ties up all of the loose ends and the questions you have in your mind. Great writing. I will be looking for my next book by the same author.
