City of Girls is to read, like the world it describes apparently was to inhabit- fun, aesthetically appealing, but a little strange when one looks deeply. The book is framed as a retelling of her youth spent participating in 1920s flapper…

The first 1/2 or 2/3 is incredible, so lush and immediate. I couldn't get enough. Then Vivian leaves NYC after "the incident" and things went downhill a bit. I felt that this last part was so rushed, and so pulled back, it lacked the…

I thought the beginning of the book was a bit slow. I didn't start getting into it until halfway when things go down. Nonetheless, I loved it and connected so much with the main character.

Aimless writing with no real point. I just couldn't get into the story. To me, it read like a run-on sentence.

When I first started reading this book I thought it was the most frivolous thing I had read in a long time, but then I came to see its depths. In the end, I really enjoyed this coming of age story of a woman and her friends living…

I would read this for the language alone. So so so gorgeous. But the plot/story and characters are just as good as the writing. A lush experience, a fully realized 30's-era NYC, and a heroine that earns every bit of your adoration.

First third of this book was somewhat entertaining but also painful to get through. Latter part much more substance and nice to read.

I think this book teaches us that life isn't black or white. It is an endearing story of someone who went against the social norms of her time. It also teaches us that not everyone we love stays in our lives forever and that's okay. I…

One of the best books I've ever read! I haven't flown through a book this quickly in a long time. The story was so fun and intriguing and glamorous! I never wanted to stop reading but I also never wanted it to end. City of Girls is a very…

Elizabeth Gilbert excels at capturing the unique voices of her characters, creating a captivating story. This was a compelling read, a story about a young woman's exploration of love and overcoming society's expectations.

Bravo! Loved every minute of it. I cried when I finished, yes because I would miss being lost in this novel and also because I was so proud of Liz. She is a remarkable storyteller and few are as gifted as she. Let yourself start and…

CITY OF GIRLS begins as a lighthearted, frothy tale full of youthful hedonism, but midway it becomes a serious, thoughtful drama about healing and forgiveness. The memorable central character, Vivian Morris, narrates the story as she looks…

One of my students, a 25-year-old Ukrainian woman, encouraged me to read this book. She had to bring it up several times before I finally ordered it to read. I found the title so off-putting that I wasn't the least bit interested. What is…

I fell in love with Vivian, the narrator of the story. Part of the reason is the narrator, Blair Brown. Brown’s wonderful expressive voice gave substance to this breezy, fun story of a young girl who moved to New York City just before…

Vivian never changes. She's still the same naive teenager who allows the power of suggestion from others to influence how she lives her life. Edna was right to tell Vivian that her life will never amount to anything for betraying her. …

If you need a strong plot, this isn't for you. I don't, and I adored it! What a fabulous main character - I could have read another few hundred pages about her fascinating life and perceptions of the world.
