Daniel Silva at the top of his game. Do I need to say more? It has murder, mayhem and espionage blended together like a fine tea and Gabriel Allon is definitely my cup of tea.
Meh! Same old, same old. Super Israeli spy and aggrieved soul chases down real badass Hezbollah evildoers while outsmarting the CIA (which has indeed fallen into disrepute) and MI6 (which is much more effective than the CIA but can't come close to the Israeli counterpart HQed at King Saul Boulevard). The Israelis save the day and the world (until the next episode.) So enough of Daniel Silva for a long time coming.
I liked the posture of forgiveness towards the terrible wrongs of the Catholic Church which are woven throughout the book. I wish this novel could have been a bit more reflective of the ethical tensions in serving justice and retribution but overall a great read as always.
Gabriel is not only an expert restorer of Caravaggio paintings working for the Vatican, but an undercover agent for Israel. When a Vatican curator falls from the dome of St. Peters, his investigation leads to tomb robbers (tombaroli). Silvia lost me when he moved away from the main story to plots against Israel. Never finished the book!
I didn`t even finish it, my first and last for this author.
This reminded me of Jack Ryan et al in the Tom Clancy books: the hero is too perfect, the agency he works for is too noble, the villains are too one dimensional, and the women are beautiful, secondary character foils for their men. The author was unable to generate any suspense even in the final sequence because the hero is perfect and is going to save the day. Yawn.
I really enjoyed the first one third of the book. The remaining two thirds had too many details which made the reading slow paced, hence only a three star rating.
A very good book. Not to be missed
Will pick up Saturday morning.
The Gabriel Allon series is comfortable like an old robe. I like the details about art,Vatican, etc.
