SOMEONE IS UP TO NO GOOD...

When Ted Fitzgerald asks the Gunsmith to come to Tuscon, Arizona, Deputy Marshal Clint Adams agrees, even without knowing the reason why. It turns out that Ted is in charge of constructing the new University of Arizona, and he thinks someone is trying to sabotage his work.

Some of the townspeople aren't happy with the new addition to Tuscon, a fact made clear when fires and damage plague the site. With the sabotage attempts escalating quickly, Clint agrees to watch Ted's back, because the Gunsmith isn't the sort of man to turn a blind eye on a friend in need...

The University Showdown (The Gunsmith, #368) by J. R. Roberts is a reasonably fast paced Western. Clint Adams comes to the aid of a friend who ends up dead. Part mystery as the Gunsmith teams up with a proper city detective, and part lead-flying western as Clint fills the bad guy with a few slugs, The University Showdown kept my interest. The building of a university was a bit of a different backdrop but the motive to the murder didn't really make sense to me. Why didn't the bad guy's gambling debts lead to embezzlement rather than the convoluted sabotage and murder plot? Fun read, though.
