This book would make little sense if read by itself, as opposed to within the context of the trilogy. Davies is a masterful writer whose prose is utterly captivating.

Wonderful piece of writing but sometimes too much bloat and superfluous information present themselves in annoying ways. However, the psychoanalysis are pertinent, and adds great to the already superior character development this series has. A must read if you liked Fifth Business!

I thought the writing was masterful. I can't wait to read the next book in the trilogy.Different content than what most of us fiction readers are used to.

As much as I enjoy Davies' writing in general, I'm a little puzzled that this particular novel received a Governor General Award. It's the second book in a trilogy, and a lot of the story is a regurgitation of Jungian psychology. Worth the read within the context of the trilogy, but I would have felt a little disappointed if this had been my introduction to Robertson Davies.
