Eerie, dreamlike, set in a world that is weirdly related to our own, The Gunslinger introduces Roland Deschain of Gilead, of In-World that was, as he pursues his enigmatic antagonist to the mountains that separate the desert from the Western Sea. Roland is a solitary figure, perhaps accursed, who with a strange singlemindedness traverses an exhausted, almost timeless landscape. The people he encounters are left behind, or worse-left dead. At a way station, however, he meets Jake, a boy from a particular time (1977) and a particular place (New York City), and soon the two are joined-khef, ka, and ka-tet. The mountains lie before them. So does the man in black and, somewhere far beyond...the Dark Tower.

Although not a SciFi fan at all, I found this pretty interesting and enjoyed the dreamy/nightmarish backdrop.

Great atmospheric story with real grit and memorable characters. Reader George Guidall does a fantastic job.

I'd compare this book to a robust brandy; a slow paced story that's great to savor, but no good if your plans are to rush through and check another one off the list. The style and language are strong, and the characters are as realistic as they are varied.

Responding to Paisano, In my humble opinion this whole series is worth reading. I am a diehard King fan but will be the first to admit it's not for everyone. If you like Old West meets futuristic post apocalypse you'll love this book. If you only like King for horror I'd move on now. I listened to the whole series on audiobooks and would do it again in a second. When it doesn't seem to make sense remember that it took him something like 20 years to write the series. He probably didn't know for sure where the first book was heading either.
