This might be one of my favourite Westerns but I have read it is more of an exploitation film. I guess much of Quentin Tarantino’s work covers controversial themes. As is characteristic of Tarantino movies & much of exploitation cinema, the movie is pretty violent. Almost always, exaggeratedly so. I saw this as Tarantino working within an audience’s expectations of him (to show hyper violent situations)- but I’m sure he still enjoys movie violence- but mostly to depict an inhuman culture & the heinousness of the story’s villains. But, ultimately to present said villains’ possible comeuppance in the grandest way possible (equally violent as they had been). Much like “Inglourious Basterds,” Waltz’s character’s verbosity adds much but I felt it almost carried the movie - wanted more from Django & Broomhilda, being pivotal characters. But, I understand that these characters- all these characters, in fact- have as much depth as characters in the fairy tale that the film alludes to its story being, with a monologue by Dr. Shultz & many fantastical elements. Liked the dynamic camera zooms adding to a Western vibe. Cool shots of vistas, silhouettes, a frightening overhead shot of a gunfight. Would recommend but be aware, there is much violence. 4/5 stars

Entertaining, but still wildly over-the-top gory, as one expects of Tarentino (glad to see Tarentino blown up in this one). Very fun performances from Jamie Foxx and Christoph Waltz (who I had not fully appreciated before...awesome).

Another Harvey Weinstein production.
No thanks, I'll pass.
Without Weinstein there'd likely be no SQuentin Terantingle.

The last great Tarantino movie. His first attempt at a Western is also his most suspenseful. Violence, comedy, chills, and thrills. What else would you expect from such a director?

Yow! that was bad.... I used to like senseless (I.e. no plot) action movies,
but now like them less and less and this one was really less than.

Liked the movie a lot but 2 things stood out to me about the plot. Why the whole mandingo subplot? Why not just BUY Broomhilda? It would have been less offensive to Candi if they just told the truth. Also, after killing half of Candi's men, the worst they can do to Django is send him off to a mine for life? He was also partly responsible for Candi's death. Doesn't really fit knowing how cruel the plantation people are to just send him off alive and well.

Probably, one the most underappreciated movies of all time. This move has everything: It's funny. It's gut wrenching.
It's a love story. Two very different people form a friendship because of a shared idea and they become Western Heroes. It shows the very worst of humanity. But also undying love, and the strength of the human spirit when faced with the most horrific circumstances.
The violence in the movie is different from most Tarantino films in that it isn't gratuitous.
The violence and cruelty is an accurate facsimile of American history and that should bother every single decent person.
The acting in this movie is stellar.

Apparently I don't get Tarantino satire. It started out okay. Loved the KKK scene, but after that this movie lost me. I thought it was awful and way too long.

Buckets of blood, weak plot, terrible script.
