This is an amazing story. Basically is is the story of how a golden retriever named Henry--for one of the trains in Thomas the Train--helped a severely autistic boy open up to the world. But it is mostly the story of a family's efforts to help the boy named Dale in any way possible to function. The family lived in Scotland and Dale was born in about 1990. I was shocked at how little support there was that that time and how little was known about autism. It took over three years to diagnose Dale, and then it took a long time to get much support. The parents were amazing in how they found ways to nurture their son. The story gets more complex after the birth of their daughter, but I don't want to give anything away. Dale himself, by then about 17, gives comments to specific topics in the book.
