Wonderful documentary, of all those super talented women, whose voices we have all heard over the years but never knew anything about them. Most of them could out-sing the people they were singing back up vocals for, in my opinion!

Amazing women, incredible voices. A joy to experience! Thank you ladies.

If you've ever wondered who the incredible female voice is on ' Gimme Shelter' (Rolling Stones) it was the shining star Merry Clayton only 20 feet from stardom. It's a shame this vocalist have been overlooked and under appreciated but they are stars of their own.
Another great look into this world of more backup though major talents contributors to famous music, mostly motown sounds, is 'Standing in the shadows of Motown.' Worth a look.

Ah, yes. Film shined a light on the backup singers who created the unforgettable hooks in yesteryear songs, why they never seemed to get the final 20 feet & why they almost disappeared by the 1990s. They were more than action figure eye candy by myopic music executives.
One executive reasoning on not promoting backup singer reeks of Dilbert.

A moving documentary about the amazingly talented back-up singers that were the real stars behind our favourite songs, I can understand why this doc rocked the Oscars. I'd heard of Darlene Love and Merry Clayton because of their inclusion on the HOME ALONE and DIRTY DANCING soundtracks, respectively, but not Lisa Fischer or any of the other mega-talents who never got recognized. These singers deserve credit but they'll never really receive it. To be that close to the real thing and yet stuck in the quicksand that is the background vocals business is a horrible paradox. Crammed with interviews from famous faces testifying to the greatness of their back-up singers, 20 FEET FROM STARDOM is eye-opening without being controversial. For anyone interested in music, this doc is a must-see that I'd easily recommend.

Few people outside the industry have ever heard of names like Darlene Love, Lisa Fischer, or Merry Clayton, which is why Morgan Neville’s Oscar-winning documentary is so important. It brings to light a subject even the most ardent music lovers rarely think about, namely the back-up singers whose soulful vocalizations add an acoustic punch to those headline performers we all listen to. According to Sting, one of the few “big names” featured in the doc, success in the music industry is as much about happenstance and luck as it is talent and these life stories certainly add credence to that sad insight. Falling prey to despondency, unscrupulous producers, and lacklustre publicity, few ever cross those twenty extra feet to reach centre stage. A poignant look at some brave and fearsomely talented people who openly share their memories as well as their hopes and disappointments. Merry Clayton, by the way, was the woman whose heart-rending cries of “Rape! Murder!” haunt the Rolling Stones’ hit “Gimme Shelter”.

I love this movie. I love these women. Stunning and heartbreaking. Ah, womanhood. Longtime Lisa Fischer fan -- lovelier than her, there are none. The ironies of their own rivalries were not lost on me although not given focus. Wretched system that makes it so. Sing on!
