Katherine Huling: Carol, let me level with you. You have perfect tone and a strong sound that's a perfect choice for the genre. But I'm using you for a bigger purpose. This pseudo-feminist fantasy tween chick-lit bullshit is a devolution of the female mission. It's cancerous to the intelligence of young women. You got this job because whether the general public chooses to acknowledge it or not, voice over matters. Everyone in the world watches movie trailers. Everyone in the world sees commercials on television, or they hear them on the radio, and that is power! Look, this quadrilogy is going to make billions of dollars and your voice is going to be the one to inspire every girl who hears it. And that's why I chose you, not because you were the best for the job. Because frankly, you weren't. I bet your dad is proud.

Add a CommentComedy niche showbiz film that is written, directed and co-produced by Lake Bell. Also stars Bell as Carol Solomon, a vocal coach in LA. Geena Davis has a small but an important role. She appears as a big Amazon woman towering over Bell.
A GREAT little Movie that COULD! & DID make me laugh, cry & feel SPIRITED! There's HOPE FOR LOVE afterall! YES!!, Lake Bell!, YES! Tig Notaro!!, YES Dimitri Martin!! LUUUVVVV it!!!!
p.s. YES baby voices!!!
Comedies should make one laugh frequently. And this one did! A refreshing treat that I highly recommend.
Quirky throughout, and got my attention quickly. Sort of loses momentum at about 2/3 mark, but I say don't give up. It picks up drama and speed toward the end, and a few characters take surprising turns.
This was written by the lead actress Bell Lake. What a talent she is. Not only was this funny, but she has been able to convey herself as a very quirky lead. The display of the disfunction is what makes this film functional. She has a cast that is quirky like her, and has written situations that one might find themselves in in reality. But, then again, I'm just a little quirky myself. She made me laugh.
Noticed that some of the people who definitely disliked this film tried it only for a short time. That was a mistake. I too found the beginning a bit confusing and tedious. But as the film progressed it got better and better until I was thoroughly enjoying it towards the end. Also, this is obviously a low budget film so don't expect a lot of well known actors, great scenery, and amazing special effects. But it still works because the subject and people are quite interesting and enjoyable. One more thing. If you believe that women are second class citizens and should not progress in the business world, you will not like this film.
Did not like this movie.
Thought it was an interesting insight into the voiceover biz.
This is a movie that succeeds in being serious but making fun of itself at the same time. A theme that runs through this movie is the sexism endemic in male-dominated professions whose "rules" have never changed; it's blatant in the way the main character's legendary voiceover father Sam tells her she'll never be good enough to compete with the men, but subtle and funny in details like his decor and chocolate brown velour tracksuit that seem to hearken back to his glory days. I will admit that Lake Bell's character/acting gets annoying - it's like she's trying to imitate Kristen Wiig as Annie Walker and isn't succeeding. Yes, it drags at times, but I feel that it's a real but funny look at a person trying to navigate their life and actually deal with what they encounter, unlike other "quirky" films that go nowhere. Overall it was better and more complex than I anticipated.
Rated 4/10.
