Bruce L. Shelley's classic text is a fantastic primer for the reader who has a burgeoning interest in the history of this great (and often, not-so-great) institution, or for the scholar that needs to quickly brush up on a few central facts concerning the establishment and running of the church. For a deeper and more detailed study of church history, however, another book may be better recommended, as "Church History" glosses over most of the finer points of the past. This isn't a knock on its quality, though, as it does what it sets out to do very well. Very readable and a great resource for students.
