"SuperMutant Magic Academy is a prep-school for mutants and witches but their paranormal abilities take a back seat to everyday teen concerns. Science experiments go awry, bake sales are upstaged, and the new kid at school is a cat who will determine the course of human destiny. In one strip, lizard-headed Trixie frets about her nonexistent modeling career; in another, the immortal Everlasting Boy tries to escape this mortal coil to no avail. Throughout it all, closeted Marsha obsesses about her unrequited crush, the cat-eared Wendy" --

This is one of my favourite graphic novels. Jillian Tamaki has a quirky, hilarious sense of humour. This books centres around a high-school for supermutants and people with magical abilities. The stories have typical high-school issues (dating, body image concerns) mixed in with a boy who can't die and a cat who must attend the high-school to ensure the completion of a prophecy. If you like quirky, strange laughs I cannot recommend this book enough.

This was a very funny book to read.
It sometimes didn't make sense but it was funny.
I hope to see more of this!

The reviews for this book are just right! Quirky! Offbeat! Coming of age! Angsty! Each page is a glimpse into some aspect of teenage life. It is a really fun read!

A series of comic strips set in a high school like any other - except for the mutants and wizards, that is. Funny and strange - I liked it a lot.

I have no idea why my library has this in the adult collection, because it's all about the experience of being a teen. Whether longing, lethargy, or lust; anger, angst, anxiety, or idealism; all emotions are felt to their extremes. Sometimes they are depicted in isolation, sometimes in combination, always through short comic strip vignettes. The book is a collection of snapshots--each getting at little bits of the experience--that add up to an emotional whole (if not a narrative one). Often random and surreal (the mutant and magical powers are put to excellent symbolic and metaphorical use) the comics feature recurring characters whom readers get to know over time. The characters each represent different interests and outlooks, but none are simple types--and often that's the point, capturing the universality of their feelings no matter who they are. This is odd, amusing, and insightful in equal turns. Most of all, it's real.

I grabbed this expecting a heartfelt tale in the vein of This One Summer with an unusual and cool setting. Thankfully I was so so so off because this was even better than I could have expected. This is a collection of webcomic strips that Tamaki has been releasing for the past few years centered in the strange little world of SuperMutant Magic Academy. The strips read like Seinfeld with a supernatural cast of teen characters. They're all utterly strange but totally compelling and hilarious. I had a serious laugh out loud moment probably ever third or fourth page. The bizarre characters will weedle their way into your heart (Frances and Trixie are my personal favorites). I've honestly never read anything quite like this before. I will say that there's a bit of a formula to Tamaki's surrealist, absurdist humor that some may grow tired of before the book is over, but I loved it and couldn't get enough. In an ideal world, I would own two personal copies of this - one to treasure forever and one to chop out particularly hilarious or poignant panels to display. Highly recommended.
