Tense, eerie, Nicole Kidman bugs her eyes out. Yet somehow The Others doesn't add up to much. For one thing, it's too long for its slight story, which could have been told in a Twilight Zone episode. And it's padded out with pointless jump scares, which seem mandatory now in any horror film. You can do better.

Nicole Kidman ruined this one.

As a genre, horror refuses to stay dead (pun intended). Around the turn of the century, there were a handful of films that embodied some important trends in the genre: "The Blair Witch Project," "The Sixth Sense," and "The Ring." The first paved the way for the found footage films, the second reintroduce a more atmospheric, less bloody type of horror, while "The Ring" brought Asian horror to American audiences. "The Others," from 2011, is firmly in the "Sixth Sense" line of horror, as well as going back further to haunted house movies like "The Innocents" and "The Haunting." I don't always like Nicole Kidman, but she's good as the overprotective mother of two children, as is the actress who plays the house keeper who seems to have a secret. Christopher Eccleston, is sadly underused. It's slow and moody, but has some good scare moments and an effective ending. Also check out "The Devil's Backbone" and "The Orphanage." Tom Cruise produced this and it was the last project they worked on together. Director Alejandro Amenabar did the Spanish version of the film that would be remade as "Vanilla Sky." Starring Tom Cruise!

An excellent ghost suspense movie! Loved the twist at the end! Make a big bowl of popcorn and watch it.

One of my fave psychological horror films. Eerie, atmospheric, and definitely related to Henry James' "The Turn of the Screw," with a nice twist at the end.

“The Others” starring Nicole Kidman is one of those psycho movies where you don’t know if the kids are pretending there are others in the house or if one kid is just trying to scare his brother into thinking the house is invaded or if the mother is just imagining it through some kind of madness. I give it an extra star because it was absolutely the opposite of anything I could have imagined. You really would have to think outside the box if you wanted to figure this one out, but all is revealed in the last 5 minutes and is it a shocker! Good acting by Nicole Kidman, born to Australian parents in Hawaii, so does this make her an American?

One of the best ghost films of our time. Spare, atmospheric.

A pretty creative ghost story from the writer/director. Nicole Kidman does a fine job as the troubled matriarch.
