Set over the course of 24 hours, Last Round At Guapa follows Rasa, a gay man living in an unnamed Arab country trying to carve out a life for himself in the midst of political and religious upheaval. Rasa spends his days translating for Western journalists and pining for the nights when he can sneak his lover, Taymour, into his room. Guapa is a fascinating, moving and powerful read telling the story of Rasa who struggles to come to terms with who he is and who he wants to be while trying to find his place in Arab society. It gives insight into the experience of being marginalized as a homosexual in a culture that doesn't recognize the western construct of a "gay identity". The background of the story encompasses his involvement the Arab Spring and being a student in the US during 9/11. Debut novel, hopefully there will be more to follow.

An interesting read, I'm glad that I recommended the library buy it. It was a better ending than most tragic gay stories.
