Every English-language writer knows Strunk and White's famous little writing manual, The Elements of Style . Many people between the ages of seventeen and seventy can recite the book's mantra - make every word tell - and still refer to their tattered grade school copy when in need of a hint on how to make a turn of phrase clearer, or a reminder on how to enliven prose with the active voice. Considering that millions of copies have been sold to millions of devotees, you might not think to ask what could enhance this (almost) perfect classic. In fact, the addition of illustrations allows readers to experience the book's contents in a completely new way, making the whole learning experience more colorful and clear, as well as adding a whimsical element that compliments the subtly humorous tone of the prose. The Elements of Style Illustrated will come to be known as the definitive, must-have edition.

The illustrated edition is beautiful and instructive. With sample sentences about New York sperm banks and illustrations of murder and baked goods, this manual offsets fervor with humor.

"Who can confidently say what ignites a certain combination of words, causing them to explode in the mind? Who knows why certain notes in music are capable of stirring the listener deeply, though the same notes slightly rearranged are impotent? These are high mysteries..." This guy understands.

This book is a timeless reference! I enjoyed reading though it recently when I had a craving for a refresher in grammar and punctuation.

A good refresher if it's been awhile since your last writing or English class.

Although this book was first published in the 1950's, it has been updated through the years.

Maria Kalman is one of my favorite illustrators, known for her work for the New Yorker. Her writing is at times both humorous and endearing. You will never forget the rules of grammar once you've read The Elements of Style as illustrated by Kalman. Two thumbs up on all her work.
