A fast paced and interesting, historical fiction, coming of age story set in the Pacific Northwest.
The author covered a LOT of ground here and I learned many interesting facts about Seattle in the 1860s that deserve some further research of my own.
Compelling grade school historical fiction.

This was interesting - kids' historical fiction set out in the Washington territory in the immediate aftermath of the Civil War. I found Jane's growth as a character totally believable, as was the tricky relationship between her and her stepmother. (Truthfully, her stepmother - not much more than a girl herself, and suddenly widowed and taking care of two kids in the middle of nowhere - might have been my favorite character.) I don't feel knowledgeable enough about the Native American tribes of the Pacific Northwest to comment on their portrayal here, though I'd be interested to read commentary on this, but that minor qualm aside, I thought this was really enjoyable. Hand this one to fans of American Girl & Little House looking to move on to something else.
