As a film, it has something to say to everyone. As a technical achievement, it brings together two opposing worlds of American cinema. This crude semi-autobiographical film is a forerunner to Scorsese's powerful Mean Streets.

A deft portrait of goomba culture in late sixties Nyc. As in all of martys movies women are either whores or madonnas. Martys real life mother cameos as an attentive mother who is content cooking for her children and being a housewife. Her grownup son, harvey keitel has difficulty relating to his girlfriend who reveals to Harvey that she was dateraped. The movie pretty much ends with Harvey "forgiving" his girlfriend for her violent experience with an ex. Harvey's girlfriend tells him to go home and the befuddled and tone deaf man takes his leave not knowing why he has been rebuffed. This movie set the stage for martys lurid and mysogenistic seventies work saying more about his character than any self serving autobiography.

Martin Scorsese's very first film, and while it has flashes of brilliance, I found it to be more of a curio in relation to the director's later, greater works ( Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, etc )

Probably Scorsese's finest, most dream-like work as a director. Not a trace of the heavy-handedness that would mar nearly all of his subsequent endeavors. Would make an enjoyable and instructive double-bill with De Palma's "Hi Mom."
