In the well-heeled milieu of New York's Upper East Side, coolly elegant Philippa Lye is the woman no one can stop talking about. Then, into her precariously balanced life, come two women who uncover an explosive secret about Philippa's single days. Add a CommentI thought the first 200 pages were kind of boring. A LOT of character development, almost too much. You already get the point but it just drones on and on about the same things. There was just enough intrigue sprinkled in to stick with it for the ending. But even that was kind of disappointing in my opinion.
Macy nails the character development. Everything felt authentic and spot on. This is a book that you need to listen to, in order to fully appreciate all the characters. She writes, in a way where scenes come alive and literally jump off the page. I will admit it took me a minute to get into the novel, but once I did, I was hooked.
While this books is well written, I'm not sure I can say I liked it. The story is told from several different characters perspectives, and the only ones I felt any empathy for were the children who were subjected to these (mostly) awful parents. Some chapters are told from a greek chorus-esque perspective, which I thought was clever.
