While First Blood is undeniably a far superior film, the second installment in the Rambo franchise is lighter weight but still an exceptionally entertaining experience. Sylvester Stallone's titular character returns to the prison camp he escaped from during the Vietnam War in a plot set up that removes a key barrier from the first film. With Rambo no longer facing off against a small town Sheriff and the National Guard, the body count rises ... substantially. The level of violence here is extraordinarily high, but it's done in a (dare I say it) fun and "cartoonish" way. Like Rocky Balboa before him, Rambo is another classic Stallone underdog-type character. The audience begins to root for him as he effectively psychologically re-lives the Vietnam war for America an wins this time. This film is an action classic with phenomenal performances from Stallone, Richard Crenna and Charles Napier.

Two-and-a-half stars only because Stallone is in it. Original First Blood is far better. It stands alone and is totally believable. Alot of part two is so far fetched it's laughable. Plus, it was poor choice to cast Napier as Rambo's antagonist (looks too much like the arrogant cop in original First Blood). Sequels are rarely any good, IE: copy-cat characters; repeat scenarios; etc. And is Rambo's deja vu retaliation against Murdock suppose to be his modus operandi for everything? Sequels need to have originality of their own.
