Nothing great. Another witches, vampire series done so-so.

I'm so glad HBO made sticking to the book fashionable or profitable or whatever it was that has got producers and directors now striving to do the same for other good books. Because we, the readers and viewers, are the winners in the end. This is another done (almost) perfectly.

Sadly, they got sloppy towards the end, and veered off, like they had run out of money or time. Which was a shame, because it was a very important part. If you haven't read the books you might not notice, but I think you'll be a bit confused.

A coworker suggested I try this series because I didn't like violence, sex, and otherwise lack of plot in the episode or two I'd seen of "True Blood"; he said that "A Discovery of Witches" was more intellectual and might appeal to me more. He was right! There is some sexual content and violence, but nothing near to the extent of "True Blood".

I binged all 8 episodes in one afternoon and was disappointed that the second season hasn't even aired yet, much less become available for checkout from the library. I'm really looking forward to season 2, as this one left off on quite a cliffhanger.

A really well concocted witches brew, beautifully conceived and executed!

Beautiful scenery of Oxford and Venice, among other places.
A binge-worthy tale... not too much violence.
The plot is fairly typical of vampire vs witch (with demons thrown in) fare, including romance and political intrigue.
It was nice that they referenced the Tudor White Queen, who was supposedly a witch.
We had just seen "The White Queen" miniseries, so that was timely.
This show is enjoyable even for older folks who are not huge fans of the fantasy realm.

Another detailed and faithful depiction of a wildly popular adult fiction series, the first season of A Discovery of Witches will not disappoint fans of the books. Many details are omitted to keep the pace brisk but the overall story does not suffer. If you haven't read the books but are a fan of romance and don't mind some vampirism definitely give this one a try. And kudos to the producers for making the cast more diverse than the depictions of the characters in the books.
