This movie reminded me why I started to watch movies. Epic and real. Top notch directing. Stellar cast. Cannot say enough good things about this movie. Special effects were stunning.

Blu ray is the only way to watch this epic, to get the most "bang" for your big screen viewing.

Some critics panned Midway, many for a number of non-cinematic reasons, as they did with the wartime love story, Pearl Harbour. I chose to compare movies: the mid-1970s version and this one. There really is no comparison: Roland Emmerick's new version is a superior entry in the WW II epic genre. Note: "epic," not "action" or "combat." Others would be Bridge on the River Kwai, Saving Private Ryan, Dunkirk, The Longest Day, Bridge Too Far, Empire of the Sun, Flag of Our Fathers.

That means the 1970s Midway talk-fest didn't even qualify as an epic.

As far as quality, I'd place this one right in the middle of the pack. Much better than some, not as good as others.

Strongest points:
The overall scope--manages to tell a variety of different stories very adroitly: Attack on Pearl Harbour, Doolittle's Tokyo raid, attacks leading up to both the attack on Midway island and the calamitous air-sea battle that followed. AND the story of the code-breakers, the men behind the final victory. In spite of all this--the movie never drags, never seems "too long."

Visual effects. Stunning. What bogged down many movies in the 1970s and beyond, was the paucity of vintage ships and planes (See Pearl Harbour, 2001). Director Roland Emmerich decided wisely to use GCI to solve the problem--and that immediately opened up huge array of eye-filling visual possibilities. I'd love to get into a time machine, and go back to 1970s Hollywood and show this movie to producers and directors!

Good performances (especially considering the actors had to use their imaginations on-set. Nothing much to see!) when they watched the final version, I'm sure Woody Harrelson, Dennis Quaid and all the others were just as stunned as everyone else.

Good show.

don't bother with this sad sack of a war film. Usually Emmerich rocks the special effects to great effect but here its all wasted and not really that good, surprisingly.
Just awful casting, young and old, and every actor over forty in this thing speaks like they've got lock jaw. really really bad.
Just watch the original Midway with Charleton Heston, much better movie all the way around.
Midway deserves an updated retelling with all the cool stuff CGI can depict, but this ain't it.

Excellent. I've watched documentaries and other Midway movies, but this was the best. I watched special features first and found out the Japanese were far superior in the war till Midway. The producers and director wanted to get the facts out to show our drastic losses.
We had a look into the background of the hero's. They had to build there own airplane and hanger deck. Amazing how real it looked. Great animation.

I really enjoyed this film. The time advances very quickly in this film. The war in the Pacific was brutal & very different from the European Front. This is the Pacific and the heroes of the Pacific. Graphic fires & explosions. I thought it was well done.

Midway attempts to recreate, with as much historical accuracy as possible, the events that led to the WWII battle that gives the film its title. The film relies on a viewer's knowledge of WWII history, and as such is not a great introduction to the battle, rather it is an attempt to show the audience an up close portrayal of what that battle was like for those who fought it.

Worst movie about Midway I ever saw, and overall very poor in every other cinematic way. I found out why, too. Go back to the beginning and look closely at the names of the companies who made it.

3.5* I enjoy these types of action movies.

Utter garbage unless you're looking for a good laugh. I laughed through the first 40 minutes at least (seriously, I did), and the rest just made me shake my head. Watch the original 'Midway' with Charlton Heston to get a much better take on the entire scenario, without the ridiculousness of a man riding a sliding torpedo across an aircraft carrier deck... that one still boggles my mind. Seriously, just don't bother.

It's a pretty shallow movie. The only thing the movie has going for it is showing here and there throughout something of what it may have been like trying to take off from or land on an aircraft carrier in the ocean. Otherwise, it's just a bunch of gunfire, burning fire, and actors acting tough. Don't expect much.
