Nick would rather write fanfiction about the feats of heroism and romantic entaglements he imagines for the very real superheroes who inhabit his city. When he meets Nova City's biggest hero (and his biggest crush), however, he resolves to become a superhero himself.

A love letter to fan-fiction writers, super heroes and romance!!

This is a big, gay superhero romance if I ever read one. And it is AWESOME! Nick Bell fantasizes about someday becoming Nova City’s own superhero Shadow Star’s love interest. The problem is Shadow Star doesn’t even know he exists…or does he? The feud between Shadow Star and his nemesis, Pyro Storm, seems to be heating up, and somehow Nick seems to be embroiled in their conflict. Add the complications that his best friend is in love with him (but Nick seems to be the only person in the world who doesn’t realize this) and the whole story turns into somewhat of a comedy of errors. A couple more things that make the story great: 1) Nick’s relationship with his widower dad is very sweet and it is so nice seeing such a positive relationship between a gay kid and his dad rather than the conflict that is so often portrayed. 2) Nick has ADHD and I love the way we get to see his internal processes. 3) Nick’s other two best friends are a pan/lesbian couple who are strong characters on their own. I can’t wait for the sequel coming out in July!

This was a rather good book. First off, I. enjoyed how this is not at all a coming to terms with being queer book. All the queer characters portrayed are unapologetically queer. Unapologetically extraordinaries… not so much. I thought that the beginning was a little slow, and Nick is almost unbelievably clueless at times, but the end made up for the slow beginning and there was a small twist I did not see coming. It did not end on a cliff hanger but there is definitely room for another book in the series.

A hilarious queer superhero action romance.
"Gibby lay on the bed, tears streaming down her face as she rocked back and forth." Well that was me, doubled over laughing, reading this book.
The Extraordinaries' main character is Nick, a gay teenager with ADHD who has a huge crush on Shadow Star, one of the local super heroes ( which they call Extraordinaries). This book is set in Nova City, rather reminiscent of NYC. Nick has a great group of friends who have each others' backs and a supportive, although often frustrated, dad. Nick's fantasies about Shadow Star make him clueless about what is right in front of him and does a lot of growing up during this book. It is a both a love story and a superhero action story. Although this book is very funny, big themes of love, loss, grief, friendship, and acceptance run throughout. And the end. Bring on the sequel like, now!
