Lilia Liska has shrewdly outlived three husbands, raised five children, and seen the arrival of seventeen grandchildren. Now she has turned her keen attention to the diary of a long-forgotten man named Roland Bouley, with whom she once had a fleeting affair. Increasingly obsessed with Roland's intimate history, Lilia begins to annotate the diary with her own rather different version of events, revealing the surprising, long-held secrets of her past. She returns inexorably to the memory of her daughter Lucy.

To say I was disappointed is an understatement. The concept of the book, an older woman, Lilia, who outlived three husbands and numerous children, appealed to me and the writing was OK. However, the endless description of Lilia's obsession with her 'boyfriend' Roland who in turn is obsessed with himself was to say the least tiresome. All in all I felt cheated of my time reading over 300 pages.

This book is written in a biographical way in the beginning which I admire. The main plot of the novel consists of Lilia Liska who has been married three times and has raised five children. These five children grew up and proceeded to have seventeen grandchildren. Now since years have started to catch up to her, and as she gets old she decides to devote her last years to a diary that belonged to a man named Roland Bouley. Roland Bouley was a forgotten name to her until now. Ive been more interested in teen relationship books, but I actually like this change of age. Yiyun li seems to like to write in a more metaphoric way, which makes it hard to understand the book at times. I do wish the book spoke more about Lilias children and family. Overall it’s an okay book. @momo of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library
