Carey Mulligan is exceptionally brilliant and delicious in this revenge tale where she takes on several persona's each night to teach men who use women as luggage: Pick up. Rape. Drop off. She's known men like this since college and the extent of the damage they can do and now it's time to do something about it but when an old college classmate drops by her coffee shop bringing back more than just memories of the past, will she get more than she bargained for?

I was quite surprised by the ending, and I imagine, you will be too.

How is this rated as highly as it is? It tells a tired trope of all men are bad in a predictable way that breaks no new ground. The romcom elements will have you cringing at the lack of comedy. The acting is tricky but with such a one dimensional script is hard to apportion much blame to the actors.

Well, *I* thought it was uplifting. But I realize that most people will think me weird for saying so ...

I've seen first efforts that are labors of love. Sometimes I find out personal experiences seem to significantly shape a picture. I did not have that feeling here; this is an 'issue' picture.
The issue is the victimization of women, but perhaps that is difficult. Are woman universally victimized?
Here, one woman takes on the rule of 'speaking truth to power', as some would have it. Some payback on men generally, seen in the light of a reported rape incident. The victim was a near life long best friend and certainly of woman of promise, a high achieving med student.
Via feminine wiles, or deceit, our protagonist manages to bring to awareness the manipulative power plays men put on women in order to get what they want, and the trauma and suffering that results.
It seems men without exception are implicated in all this, Mr. Wonderful is not going to show up.
However, a few males who show up here turn out to be useful.
They are instrumental in resolving the issue.
In my view, things here are manipulated to illustrate a view of life in which one sex is intrinsically culpable, the other besieged.
As such, to me, this is a revenge fantasy, a work of propaganda, not art.

Going into festival season last year, Promising Young Woman was one of my most anticipated films, especially with Bo Burnham’s role in it. Now, even after several months since seeing it and contemplating it a lot I still have mixed feelings. Carey Mulligan delivers an excellent performance as Cassie, a vengeful med school dropout grieving the death of her best friend, Nina, who was raped by their classmate. Bo Burnham is charming and that “Stars are Blind” scene really got me. However, I believe some of the messages in this film to be a little misguided -- particularly, the ending.

(Major spoiler warning)

Cassie’s death does not feel like a satisfying conclusion at all. It could be argued that some of her methods of exacting revenge make her more of an anti-villain than a pure hero, but something does not sit right with me about this movie’s resolution being the police. Especially given that the school’s legal system and handling of rape cases is criticized many times prior to the end. I can’t imagine that this is a very uplifting message for survivors of sexual assault, that their efforts to bring justice only result in death.

That being said, I don’t hate this film, but I don’t quite love it, either. It starts off strong but its messages ultimately end up muddled somewhere between the second and third acts.

Powerful and dark with an ending that you won't forget. Magnificent performance by Carey Mulligan.

Quite an enjoyable movie but I don't think Ms. Mulligan really deserve that Oscar nomination...rather overrated!

Despite its satirical and exploitation film stylistic elements, Promising Young Woman delivers a searing on rape culture in America. Director Emerald Fennell does absolutely sublime work with her debut feature. It's an incredibly calculate film, one that punches you in the gut whenever you start to get comfortable. It makes for a film that is captivating, uncomfortable, and absolutely unforgettable.

WOW. A shocking, twisted, & genius revenge thriller. Like the cover says, a game changer. Carey Mulligan is incredible in it. & a real contender for the Oscar. A must-see & unforgettable film.

Some quotes in IMDb, thanks to its contributors:

Perhaps the quotes below are too familiar and left out in IMDb:

Okay, I-I'm not the only one who didn't believe it. If-if you have a reputation for sleeping around, then maybe people aren't gonna believe you when you say something's happened.
And those choices, those mistakes, can be so damaging and really regrettable.
- Regrettable?
Yes. I mean, because what would you have me do? Ruin a young man's life every time we get an accusation like this?
Can you guess what every woman's worst nightmare is? The thing is you thought you'd gotten away with it because everyone had forgotten.
So, you're perfect, right? You've never done anything you're ashamed of?
Poor Ryan, just an innocent bystander.
Move on. Please. For all of us.
