A debut from Melinda Gates, a timely and necessary call to action for women's empowerment.

"How can we summon a moment of lift for human beings – and especially for women? Because when you lift up women, you lift up humanity."

For the last twenty years, Melinda Gates has been on a mission to find solutions for people with the most urgent needs, wherever they live. Throughout this journey, one thing has become increasingly clear to her: If you want to lift a society up, you need to stop keeping women down.

In this moving and compelling book, Melinda shares lessons she's learned from the inspiring people she's met during her work and travels around the world. As she writes in the introduction, "That is why I had to write this book—to share the stories of people who have given focus and urgency to my life. I want all of us to see ways we can lift women up where we live."

Melinda's unforgettable narrative is backed by startling data as she presents the issues that most need our attention—from child marriage to lack of access to contraceptives to gender inequity in the workplace. And, for the first time, she writes about her personal life and the road to equality in her own marriage. Throughout, she shows how there has never been more opportunity to change the world—and ourselves.

Writing with emotion, candor, and grace, she introduces us to remarkable women and shows the power of connecting with one another.

When we lift others up, they lift us up, too.

I widely recommend this book to anyone who is looking to know more about gender equality and the social responsability we as a privileged human beings have to lift women up together and with the help of everyone. Melinda shares super insigthful data about how the situation of women worldwide is still a subject that needs all our attention, we must be alarmed and alert about what are we going to do individually to contribute to help future generations to live in a equal society including everyone everywhere, looking beyond any biases and stigmas, we are all the same and deserve the same opportunities. Love it!

'When you lift up women, you lift up everybody - families, communities, entire countries.’ Melinda tells the stories of the inspiring women she met from all over the world, excavates into the data, and powerfully illustrates issues that need our attention. Melinda links between women's empowerment and the health of societies. She provides reasonable and beneficial ways; each one of us can make a difference. I enjoyed this book and how good Melinda tells us about her personal life without making me feel bored. I felt tragic every time I opened this book and came across women’s heartbreaking stories. A change is necessary. @Mahara of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library

A great book! A very well-written book, written in a coherent and understandable manner. This book resonated with me on a personal note as a person from a developing country.
The author is passionate about women empowerment, especially in places where women aren’t considered people. Gender equality is important because all lives are equal, as the author’s research and personal anecdotes suggest. The idea of ‘lift’ is powerful – in women, in children, and in educating everyone involved. I would highly recommend this book.

Wow! Melinda Gates has written a very personal and inspiring book in which she examines how women around the world can be given "the moment of lift," when they learn to fly, in the metaphorical sense. Her view is that these women and many other people around the world have been made outsiders and that our goal should be to create a culture in which there is little or no urge to create outsiders. In particular, in addition to addressing the "Me Too" movement in the US, she speaks about women in Africa and India who live in societies in which women are not allowed "to fly" and what the Gates Foundation is doing to remedy this problem, which sometimes bears no resemblance to what they originally thought they should be doing. Buy-in by the locals, she writes, is absolutely essential, a principle that recent conservation efforts have also employed. The real life examples she uses are incredibly moving. Although she is a devout Catholic, she courageously champions contraceptives as a way to save lives and to make lives healthier and more fulfilling. She also writes candidly about her relationship with her husband, Bill, and how they have worked, and continue to work, together to make sure that their relationship is an equal partnership. All in all, a great read!

I wish you would make it clearer that my request is accepted and ask where I'd like to pick it up, as of old.
