Jo Beth Siddon is a bloodhound trainer with a special talent for harrowing search-and-rescue missions, and a bad habit of mouthing off to deputies who refuse to take orders from a woman. When she's suspected or murder, she finds herself treading a quagmire as thick and treacherous as the Okefenokee Swamp, trying to prove her innocence and maintain the independence and freedom she's fought for all her life.

I haven't been reading these in order, but every one I do read is better than the last. There are not feminist rants, but there is clearly a struggle as Jo Beth fights injustice, and battles to overcome the scars of her emotionally abusive father, and deadly abusive ex-husband. She is over-protective of her hard won freedom, and not yet fully recovered physically from the beating, at hands of said ex, that left her hospitalized for months. We hope the fortress walls around her will come tumbling down--but they don't.
This is a book any woman who has faced sexism, institutional neglect, or job discrimination will love. Probably not for princesses nor men--unless they are feminists.
Oh, and must love dogs.

This has got to be the slowest book I've ever read. I'm 170 pages in and there's still no plot. All I've gotten are feminist rants, bloodhound search-and-rescues, manic self-defence measures, way too many flashbacks, and vague hints about both a will and an abusive ex. I'm not slogging through the remaining 291 pages in vain hopes of a plot showing up.
