Present day: Julia Hamill has made a horrifying discovery on the grounds of her new home in rural Massachusetts: a skull buried in the rocky soil--human, female, and, according to the trained eye of Boston medical examiner Maura Isles, scarred with the unmistakable marks of murder. Boston, 1830: In order to pay for his education, medical student Norris Marshall has joined the ranks of local "resurrectionists"--those who plunder graveyards and harvest the dead for sale on the black market. But when a distinguished doctor is found murdered and mutilated on university grounds, Norris finds that trafficking in the illicit cadaver trade has made him a prime suspect.

This was really good, Gerritsen at the top of her game. The back and forth in time was handled well, and just made for a compelling story and memorable characters. Julia's not fully fleshed out as a character, but the others are (even curmugeonly Harry), and Rose haunts you. Good snapshots of rich/poor life and medicine in the 1830s, even if the dialogue is definitely modern rather than how people back then spoke. Really enjoyed this one

Well written novel; the narrative flows very easily. I liked the writer very much.
The Novel take place in 1830 Boston area and present day. About a women who buys a house in the present and finds some bones of women dated during that era back in time.
It tells of a tale of four doctors who uncover a plan to kill the daughter of poor women who gave birth in a hospital. There appears a spectre who is killing the people who might have known about the woman and the baby. An excellent book. I would read much more of her.

Excellent thriller - the way she goes back and forth between present and past is well done and never confusing. Enjoyed the characters and the historical details.

Excellent storyline. Loved the swap between 1830 Boston and current day. Couldn't put the book down!! I appreciate Gerritsen's writing ability!!!! I recently read a couple of books whose writing was so elementary.

I liked how this was set in two separate eras. A good mystery that left me guessing until nearly the end.

Enjoyed the two plotlines - one from the 19th century and one contemporary - dealing with the history of an old house and the secret behind the bones found buried in its back yard.

Fantastic blend of two eras. Surprising, while logical, conclusion. Wonderful and loveable characters! Very well developed. This book should come with a disclaimer, however, to not read while eating!
