Another excellent experience provided by @VPL which I’ve not seen before (or it’s been so long I’ve forgotten it). Fantastic acting and production, with an all too relevant message that freedom to think is sacrosanct & must be respected.

“That if you take a law like evolution and you make it a crime to teach it in the public schools… And tomorrow you may make it a crime to read about it. And soon you may ban books and newspapers… Because fanaticism and ignorance is forever busy, and needs feeding.”

Brilliant.

Of special concern, however, is the lack of any Person of Colour in the film. While the opening and closing songs are sung by the incredible Ms Leslie Uggams, she is the only one in the entire effort to not happen to be white. Given the original case was in Tennessee, it’s odd.

One of the many pertinent questions that was brought to the table (or, should I say "courtroom") in 1960s "Inherit The Wind" was - "Can an atheist believe in god?"

Well - For you to find out what is concluded about an atheist embracing Christianity, you'll just have to watch this "Evolution Vs. Creation" picture for yourself in order to see exactly what's what.

Considering this film's subject matter (Evolution Vs. Heavenly Creation) and the year in which it was released (1960) - I certainly can't imagine that "Inherit The Wind" was a big "box office blockbuster". But, of course, when you take into account this film's heavy-weight cast - That, alone, would have certainly enticed a lot of curiosity seekers into the movie theaters.

Anyway - If you are someone who wishes not to hear some valid attacks made against the absurdity of the bible, then, I suggest that you find your movie-entertainment elsewhere.

This movie is based upon the true event of the Southern trial of a high school teacher that dared to discuss evolution in the classroom. The main stars are Spencer Tracy and Frederich March who play the two major lawyers of the USA. Of course the Evangelicals of the South believed then as today that the world is 6000 years old, etc. To deal with such a topic, the film is half musical/half zany as the people of the Southern town actually believed that they were going to be struck dead by a lightening bolt if they permitted the school to teach evolution. This film is not "Judgement at Nuremburg." Some critics contend that the film is a hidden slap against McCarthyism.

🐒 👨‍⚖️Between this movie and "Elmer Gantry," you can find out all you need to know about organized religion. The lead roles are actor's dreams. High school actors used to do the climactic courtroom scene in competitions. Try that now and see how you get scored! Much of the dialogue is taken from the trial transcripts.

Wonderful film. Spencer Tracy and Gene Kelly give naturalistic performances. Fredric March uses a stylized approach to depict the grandiose personality of his character.

VERY GOOD 1960 film version of Scopes Monkey Trial - interesting peek into small town culture, science, religion and more. Spencer Tracy does a fine job, and I was VERY impressed with Fredric March's performance (and all those facial tweaks).

I would like to cancel the hold for “Inherit the Wind” at Dundas Library.since I no longer need it I thought I had already done so, so please do not fine me. The online system apparently doesnt allow me to do this. I am a senior and it has been to cold for me to do this in person.

I liked this 1960 court room legal drama. It was well acted. It is good for all ages. The story is strong. It was a good script. It had great actors/actresses.

Watch Hollywood giants Spencer Tracy and Fredric March butt heads in this fictionalized version of the Scopes Monkey Trial. Classic film at its best. The ending is thought provoking that makes you challenge what you think you know.
