Jake's just starting school and things seem to be going so well as he gets ready for his day. His dog Fred wakes him up by licking him in the eye, his teeth are brushed, his favorite shirt is on and there are tasty cookies for dessert in his lunch box. His parents are all smiles and encouragement as they drive up to the school. And that's when things start to go wrong. First of all, who are all these kids running around? Jake is worried. Then he meets his teacher and she has red hair and a red dress and apparently that's just too much for poor Jake. He screams and wraps himself firmly around his parent’s legs making a "clumping mass" that won't unclump. The rest of the day is hard for Jake and his parents because it's impossible to do finger painting when your hands are full of parents. Recess just doesn't work with three people stuck together. All seems lost until right at the end of the day the teacher pulls out a book to read to the class called "My Dog Fred." Jake releases his parent's legs and says (quietly) "I have a dog named Fred." The teacher has Jake hold the book while she reads and they bond for the first time. "This whole first year with Mrs. Moore has been a lot of fun. Jakes special place to learn and grow is classroom Number 1."
The words are wonderful but it's the pictures that will have you laughing until your sides hurt. The clumped up family riding a tricycle together is particular hysterical. Anyone who has ever had a clingy child will nod their heads knowingly as they read and laugh their way through this wonderful book about the first day of school. If you like Jakes Starts School by Michael Wright you should take a look at his debut book called Jake Stays Awake.
