There are questions that the Mueller report couldn't -- or wouldn't -- answer. What instigated the Russia investigation? Did President Trump's meddling incriminate him? There's no mystery to what Trump thinks. He claims that the Deep State, a cabal of career bureaucrats, is concerned only with protecting its own power and undermining the democratic process. Conversely, James Comey has defended the FBI as incorruptible apolitical public servants who work tirelessly to uphold the rule of law. James B. Stewart sifts these conflicting accounts to present a clear-eyed view of what happened inside the FBI in the lead-up to the 2016 election, drawing on scores of interviews with key FBI, Department of Justice, and White House officials and voluminous transcripts, notes, and internal reports. This is the saga of the FBI's simultaneous investigations of both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Stewart shows what was set in motion when Trump fired Comey, triggering the appointment of Robert Mueller as an independent special counsel and causing the FBI to open a formal investigation into the president himself. This unprecedented event joined in ongoing combat the presidency and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. There is no room for compromise, but plenty for collateral damage. Deep State goes beyond the limits of the legally constrained Mueller report, showing how the president's obsession with the idea of a conspiracy against him is still upending lives and sending shockwaves through both the FBI and the Department of Justice.

Stewart pulls together the media and state reports on the first 3 years of the Trump administration and its sad record of in-fighting. Nothing much new here, but the portrayal of competing egos and the bizarre actions of Trump reaffirms the disarray of current USA politics. While we all have been saturated with the constant ramblings of Trump's unleashed narcissism it still seems unbelievable that this clown is president. What the puck!

Meh. Good synopsis of the first three years of the corrupt Trump Administration but, if you've been following daily from 2016 to the present as I have, this isn't anything new. It might be OK for referral at some future time when people ask where did the American republic went off the rails and was sold out by self-serving, sycophants who knuckled under to a psychopath. Look no further than Stewart's book. Other than that, not much here. Many other books are probably better.

Interesting stories about the FBI and their interactions with DJT. Alot of this has been in the news, but some details were added which makes it more interesting. One thing that seemed to stand out too me is that while these agents in the FBI are dedicated professionals, they are also human beings who care about their families. Maybe they also need training in how to deal with pushy people-in this case DJT.
