A gripping debut work of crime fiction, from the author of the bestselling memoir about life as a New York City cop, Blue Blood . ("May be the best account ever written of life behind the badge." -- Time )
In Red on Red, Edward Conlon tells the electrifying and suspenseful story of two NYPD detectives, Meehan and Esposito: one damaged and introspective, the other ambitious and unscrupulous. Meehan is compelled by haunting and elusive stories that defy easy resolution, while Esposito is drawn to cases of rough and ordinary combat. A fierce and unlikely friendship develops between them and plays out against a tangle of mysteries: a lonely immigrant who hangs herself in Inwood Hill Park, a serial rapist preying on upper Manhattan, a troubled Catholic schoolgirl who appears in the wrong place with uncanny regularity, and a savage gang war that erupts over a case of mistaken identity.
A literary thriller about the twisted dynamic of a successful police partnership--the tests of loyalty, the necessary betrayals, the intersections of life and work-- Red on Red tells an unrelenting and exciting story that captures the grittiness, complexity, ironies, and compromises of life on the job.

Just as compelling as articles Conlon wrote for The New Yorker under teh name Marcus Laffey. Wonderful cahracterization, and a story that takes you right into the streets and precint houses of New York.

Only took two pages to get bored. Heavy dark psychobabble.

Years ago I read Blue Bloods and thoroughly enjoyed the book.Red on Red started great then quickly slowed to a crawl.

I picked this up simply because I liked the title. Lesson learned. It was a good read but probably only because I am a reader by nature. It did not deliver to my "Great Title" expectations.

Good gritty crime drama written by a member of the NYPD with a Harvard degree. Makes it a thoughtful, meaty read.

I like the idea of this book in that it follows 2 detectives rather than focussing on one crime and the reader gets a real feel for the characters and their relationship. It is quite funny at times plus brutal. But I think it needed some severe editing and about half way through I realised I had lost interest. Didn't do it for me.

"There are few debut novels as good as this one. Edward Conlon is a veteran New York City cop whose memoir, Blue Blood, was a New York Times Notable Book. It detailed not only his own career as a beat cop, but his place in his family of cops, including his father and grandfather. Few writers bring this kind of experience to crime fiction, but Red On Red is a story by a masterful writer who knows how to build great characters and keep the narrative moving."
