Sid Marty's extraordinary clarity of thought and language makes this ambitious book a pleasure to read. He combines native legends, pioneer tales, cowboy myths, and wildlife stories to paint an engaging portrait of his home in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, near Pincher Creek, Alberta. There is a rich store of history here - geological, human, and personal - and fascinating glimpses of individual lives. Marty has the rare ability to draw universal insight from his personal experience and observation. A delight.

Mar 27, 2017

March 27 2017......we have spent the last month and a half reading this out loud to each other for 15 to 45 minutes a night. Every night after our reading, my husband, who is not a reader of books (hence the reading out loud scenario) has made the comment, "that's a good book!" I chuckle to myself every time he says it. Funny enough, Sid will be at the Frank Slide Interpretive Center on Wednesday with CBC. We have our tickets, as we feel like we have been living with this fellow for the last little while. He has made a snowy, blowy, end of winter and beginning of spring, much more enjoyable for us both. The fact that he lives so close by, and that we are familiar with most of the places that he talks about in the book, just made it that much more enjoyable. I think we will hang around with Sid for another one of his books, as we continue with our read out loud adventure. I've found it is more enjoyable to share a book with someone, rather that just read it yourself.
