I have loved Laura Joh Rowland's feudal Japan mysteries with Sano Ichiro since Book #1. This is #15 and one of her best yet. The plot is multi-faceted, with the usual Sano side-kicks all playing important roles, especially his wife Reiko, and an emerging role for his son, Masahiro who is coming of age. Rowland crafts an intricate web of main plots and subplots with her usual creativity. This novel is slightly different from others in the series in that it is set around an actual historical event about which far more is speculated than actually known. Rowland writes a historical note up front (which I prefer to afterwards as most authors do) which separates what is known historically and what is speculation - and then makes sure we are clear about what in the book is from her imagination as a novelist. A great read I highly recommend.
