How a Grassroots Movement Took on the Gun Lobby and Why Women Will Change the World
Jan 31, 2020
I read this and noticed some significant errors. In the first place, the writer does not seem to know much about guns. For example she uses the term 'clips' where it should be 'magazines.' (see pg. 4) She conflates suicide by gun and murder by gun, which is a common error. Most US gun deaths are suicides (IIRC over 60%). But there is not evidence that gun control equates to less suicide. Japan has almost no guns in civilian hands due to strict gun control, but Japan has a higher suicide rate than the US. She advises that police should 'shoot him in the leg' rather than 'shooting to kill' when faced with a threat(p. 201). No firearms trainer would advise that. And police do not shoot 'to kill.' They are trained to shoot to stop. If Watts wishes to be active in pushing new legislation, she needs first to learn about the topic that she wants to legislate.
