The first live-action Star Wars movie in decades (at the time) was in my opinion, good. But flawed. Which pains me to say that. I am somewhat a fan of Star Wars myself. The film is packed with nostalgia to please every Star Wars fan. We got to see Han Solo, Chewbacca, Princess Leia, C3PO and R2D2. And of course, Luke Skywalker. The film also had moments where you just went, “huh?” First off, why does BB8 (an admittedly very cute droid) just so happen to find Rey in the vast Jakku desert? Why does Rey immediately attack Poe when he sees him for the first time? Surely even in Star Wars there is at least some form of decency. Why does the Millenium Falcon JUST so happens to be on Jakku? If Chewy and Han were alive (which they were), why did they leave it the first place? How the hell does Rey know how to fly said Millenium Falcon? Yeah she knows how to ride a speeder bike of some sorts, but an entire ship? Heck, Rey admits to never have flown the Millenium Falcon, until doing just that. Huh? I could go on and on. I guess that’s the big flaw with Rey. She just so happens to know critical information, and even knows how to duel with lightsaber - despite never fighting with one before. Let alone able to defeat a train Jedi killer in Kylo Ren. Even if she was using a staff-like lightsaber (since she seems very proficient with a staff to begin with), I doubt she would even then be able to defeat Ren. Even her realization of her being force-sensitive seems off. Surely if she was force sensitive, she would be able to use it from birth. That’s how the force works. But only during this film she can use the force? Really? Moving on from Rey, the rest of the characters were okay. Poe was okay. Han and Chewy were great (obviously), and it was legit sad to see Han die by the hands of his own son. Kylo was meh. Snoke was very interesting, maybe the most interesting character in the film. Shame we didn’t see him more. Seeing Luke, even for one scene, was cool, even if it was glorified fan service. There was some great battle scenes, from Poe and Rey fending off Tie-Fighters on Jakku, to even the lightsaber battles. All-in-all, a decent film, though it seems that the older cast easily outshined the newer breed of Star Wars characters. Rey seems needlessly powerful for a new character, with most of her knowledge and powers seem out of left field. However, if you are interested in the new trilogy of Star Wars films, this movie is a decent enough for Star Wars fans. Score: 3 / 5. @Ay-J of the Hamilton Public Library Teen Review Board Star Wars the Force Awakens is the first movie in the sequel trilogy of George Lucas’s Star Wars. The movie begins with Resistance pilot Poe Dameron receiving a map to Luke's location. Stormtroopers commanded by Kylo Ren destroy the village and capture Poe. His droid, BB-8, escapes with the map and encounters a scavenger, Rey. Stormtrooper FN-2187, unwilling to kill for the First Order, frees Poe, and the two escape in a TIE-Fighter. When they turn back to Jakku to retrieve BB-8, they are shot down by a First Order Star Destroyer and crash-land. Finn survives and encounters Rey and BB-8. If you are a fan of Star Wars or watched any previous Star Wars movies, I would highly recommend watching this movie. The movie has a brilliant storyline that feels just like an original trilogy Star Wars movie. The Force Awakens is a great movie for people of all ages to enjoy. It is very entertaining to watch from start to finish and there is never a dull moment. Overall, if I had to rate this novel, I would rate it five out of five stars. @Sapphirereads of the Teen Review Board of the Hamilton Public Library
