This third installment from millennial author Shannon manages to keep pace with the intensity of her first two books while bumping up the scope of action and intrigue another notch. Shannon's writing is uneven, but I'm not sure this is altogether a minus. On one hand the story gets away from her at moments, calling for a little more suspension of disbelief than I was willing to give, or placing motivations in her characters that are subtly out of alignment with actions they took a chapter or two earlier. And there are a significant number of common grammatical errors and even typos. On the other hand Shannon at her best exhibits a depth of feeling and a capacity for the complexities of relationship worthy of an author with three times her experience (not to mention her years)! Even more than in the first two novels, her writing in /The Song Rising/ soars here and there to heights I can only call poetic. She may be full of contradictions, but I for one am loving every minute of it. I can't wait for book #4!
