Denzel Washington plays a reformed murderer/almost pro baseball player who thinks his provider role excuses his abuse of his family. This is a snapshot of the 40s and 50s, when restricted gender, class, and race roles meant his wife (well-played by Viola Davis) couldn't see a better path. The characters are well-played but because this was adapted from the play, it is heavily dialogue-driven and slow at times.
