I will open my review with a few qualifications about myself. First, I'm in my early 60's which does not put me in the new social media world, I do not have a twitter or other such accounts. I'm on Facebook, but that is basically to keep up with my grandkids and family. Now about this book. Before beginning this book, I had read other reviews this book was Orwellian or 1984ish. After reading it, I would lean more towards "1984", but now updated. But don't let that deter you from reading it yourself. Like 1984, privacy is what is being taken away, only now with the electronic means of social media and all it's ilk. When "1984" was written, a lot of the devices used were science fiction (like the early versions of "Star Trek). With this book, (an updated "1984"), the tools or means already exists or could be very easily developed, and therefore are possible. Additionally, there is a belief widely held today, that science and society is far more enlightened today than ever before and therefore we are moving toward a more enlightened and fulfilling future. Well, this book takes you that possible world and I believe, its a world that could be right around the corner. I especially loved the aspect of why it was good to give up so much or our privacy for the good of society as a whole. How this social media world, the world of the Internet can make our lives all the better. But presented in the perspective or lens of "1984". Although I only gave this book a three stars, (it should be 3.5), because of some of the predictability in the story plot, I found it to be quite thought provoking and enlightening. A very plausible and believable work about the course of our future and would recommend it as a very worth while read.
