I have so much respect for this novel. It is such a beautifully written, poignant story of love, loss, secrets, friendship, family, religion and politics. Leila's life is so marked by sorrow and loss from the moment she enters this world, yet even through all the ugliness and intolerable situations she endures, she finds people to love (and who love her) and never loses her own strength of character or sense of compassion. This is not a light read, but well worth it.I have so much respect for this novel. It is such a beautifully written, poignant story of love, loss, secrets, friendship, family, religion and politics. I loved 'The Mothers' and this new book by Brit Bennett definitely did not disappoint. Bennett has such a talent for story telling and creating characters that you really get invested in. Two sisters; two parallel lives that turn out so differently based on which fork in the road they take. Such a beautiful story about family and love and fate and creating your destiny. This is really not 'my kind of book' but for some reason I was drawn to it and at times quite enjoyed it. It was great to escape reality for a while, but it really did have the most disappointing ending!! It was hard to not be lured by time travel and the possibility of learning magic ( which the author manged to make seem rather realistic......).This is really not 'my kind of book' but for some reason I was drawn to it and at times quite enjoyed it. This was a fun, easy read, but for me had a very unsatisfying ending (I want more closure!!). I understand why it is part of Reese's book club: I can absolutely see her making a TV series out of this (she is probably already planning on playing Alix!!) It has the ingredients for an entertaining show (and an enjoyable read). It's not too deep or serious, which sometimes is just what you need. This was a fun, easy read, but for me had a very unsatisfying ending (I want more closure!!). Wow this book is fantastic. Part arboreal missive, part epic family saga--it is both a cautionary tale (we can't treat our country like a tireless vending machine for natural resources!) and a beautifully crafted history. This novel is wonderfully written, and even though all the stories could stand on their own, the restraint in how each part of the story is revealed and and how they all come together in the end makes it that much more interesting. I wish it was possible to travel through the histories of the people in my family in the same way. There were parts in this book that left me with questions, and definitely parts that made me think the writer was not involved in child-rearing (!) but over-all I fully recommend this read!Wow this book is fantastic. A nice little read that reminds you to live in the moment and stay present because life is fleeting and you never get a second chance to re-live it. (And who doesn't need to be reminded of that every once in a while!)

I enjoyed this book. It was a beautifully written, character-driven novel about family, heartache and anger (and what a cancer it can be). It is a story about how we live with hurt and disappointment, how we hold on, and how we let go. If you are looking for a gripping page-turner then keep on going.....that being said, this was a very pleasant read.I enjoyed this book. This was such a sweet, quick read. I feel like Debbie Tung is my kindred spirit; it is like she peered into my soul and wrote a book about me! Introverts unite :)
(Quiet Girl in a Noisy World by Debbie Tung is also great)
